6. SOUNDBITE (French) Lucile Hadžihalilović, writer/director – on growing up with the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen
"I imagine like most of us I was raised with all kinds of fairy tales. My mother loved Andersen and she read me Andersen’s fairy tales when I was very small. They’re sometimes quite cruel stories, but at the same time they’re very beautiful, they’re intriguing and full of images I always intended to make films that do have this fairy tale level within them, it’s a way to go really deep better than starting from reality always looking at boundaries and limits. All my films I would say are about growing up. About maturity, tests which make you grow up. So fairy tales fit well with that. I love the poetry of them, and I love the complexity of Andersen’s fairy tales in particular."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) August Diehl, actor:
"I grew up with ‘The Snow Queen.’ I was very much surprised, that a French (filmmaker) knew this fairy tale. Because I think in France it is not so much known, but it was the most, I would say, most creepy fairy tale that I read when I was young. And, when I read the script again, it was one of the reasons why I wanted to do it, because I always thought one should make a movie about the Snow Queen. And now it’s a different thing, but it is very close still to Hans Christian Andersen. And I’m still reading this also to my kids. And, it is, it’s not only a fairy tale, it’s a little bit more than a fairy tale. It’s, yeah, a real creepy story. And I love it."
9. SOUNDBITE (French) Marion Cotillard, actor:
"Well I didn’t know ‘The Snow Queen’ at all as a story when I was small. I discovered it through the Disney film. So it took me a while to realise that the Disney film was very, very far away from the original narrative."

"In fact this actress had her hour of glory, she’s perhaps not quite as outstanding as she once was. There was something I found very touching about her. I invented her, I invented a whole host of different stories, rivalries, love stories with actors. I invented failures and flops, I invented her decline in a sense .And perhaps that was the most important for me."

"This actress had her hour of glory, she’s perhaps not quite as outstanding as she once was," explained Cotillard at the press conference. "There was something I found very touching about her. I invented her, I invented a whole host of different stories, rivalries, love stories with actors. I invented failures and flops, I invented her decline in a sense .And perhaps that was the most important for me."
