STORYLINE:
Thousands of people lined up to pass through the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica on Saturday as part of the Jubilee year events despite the absence of Pope Francis who was admitted to the hospital for treatment for a persistent respiratory tract infection on Friday.
A Vatican statement said the Pope slept well during a quiet first night in hospital and was up eating and reading Saturday.
Francis, 88, ate breakfast Saturday morning and read the newspapers while continuing his drug therapy, according to his spokesman Matteo Bruni.
This is Francis’ fourth hospitalization at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome since his 2013 election and raised questions about his increasingly precarious health.
Father Enzo Fortunato, director of communications for St. Peter’s Basilica, told the Associated Press that thousands of pilgrims prayed for the Pope in the Basilica Saturday morning.
