"Point and line to surface, as Kandinsky said. That may at first seem very basic or elementary, but it has led to great diversity. We named the exhibition Kandinsky”s Universe because this renewal of painting through elementary forms, which began in the 1920s and continued throughout the entire 20th Century, ultimately resulted in the true liberation of colour."

“The exhibition starts in the 1910s and goes all the way up to the 1970s. So it’s a big arc that gets drawn here. With Kandinsky’s theories of colours and forms and their emotional resonance in people as the main subject of the exhibition.”

“I mean, it is a very art historical exhibition in many ways. There is a lot of Kandinsky’s biography in it. Also a lot of, maybe, movements such as hard edge or op-art that maybe some viewers wouldn’t be familiar with. But also, you can just not read anything and look at the pictures, and the pictures speak for themselves.”

“I think kids love Kandinsky. I think Kandinsky also really loved children’s drawings. And this kind of playfulness in his works. You always see, which is funny, because if you look at pictures of him he always looks like such a stern, serious man in a suit. But then his pictures have so much colour, so much life, so much playfulness.”

Berlin’s Museum Barberini is hosting many of the most important works by Russian-born artist Kandinsky.
