"I was really, really touched. It really means a lot to me. I think it might, be clear after last night what it means to me. This is the root of the rest of my life. This is the root of my filmmaking life. And it’s because of this festival. Now, if we’re going to play a hypothetical game, you could imagine me maybe going to any other film festival first. It probably would have made a huge effect. But there is an internationalist core in this film festival. There’s something so, so crucially internationalist about the spirit of this film festival. Maybe it has something to do with the first remit, when it was set up in 1951 to be about communication, to be about understanding between people, I don’t know. But it has at its heart this sort of incredibly open… It’s like a fan. It just opens the world. And it has these incredible sections. I mean, it has, of course, the (unknown), but it also has a Forum, which is extraordinary and an even wider palette than the Panorama. And it has, you know, the Kinder festival it. It feels to me as if it’s part of its endeavor to just open eyes and… Yeah, it really gave me, as I made clear last night, you know, my life’s work, and so it means an enormous amount. It’s like, you know, it’s no secret that I wasn’t very happy at school, but this was my school, so it’s like your school giving you a very beautiful Golden Bear and saying keep going. It’s a lovely thing."

(Reporter: "So I would like to hear your position regarding the BDS boycott over Israeli academic and cultural, artists and institutes. Thank you.")
"I’m a great admirer of and have a great deal of respect for BDS, and I think about it a lot. I am here today and yesterday and tomorrow and the next day, because I decided to come. I decided it was more important for me to come. I was given, thanks to the festival, a platform as I am given today, which I decided in a personal moment was potentially more useful to all our causes than me not turning up. It was a judgment call and a personal judgment call that I take full responsibility for. But I have enormous respect and understanding of the need for people to find ways of being powerful, because what we’re all up against is this feeling of powerlessness. And this is, in a way, the most difficult thing that we’re all having to cope with right now is this feeling of helplessness, this feeling of powerlessness. And so any powerful action, gesture we can make feels like a good option. And I understand absolutely that that can feel like boycotting, can feel and very often is – the most powerful thing we can do."

STORYLINE:
Hot off the heels of receiving her honorary Golden Bear at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival, Tilda Swinton attended a press conference to speak about the honor.
The presser was chaired by festival director Tricia Tuttle. Swinton said that the Berlinale was her "school" and she was honored to be celebrated here.
"It’s no secret that I wasn’t very happy at school, but this was my school, so it’s like your school giving you a very beautiful Golden Bear and saying, keep going. It’s a lovely thing," she smiled.
Swinton also discussed her plans post Berlin, saying she was going to head home to Scotland for a well needed rest.
