"Every new leader, especially when they are a leader of the most powerful country in the world, you have to see how you can develop a working relationship and how you can, as I said, you know, minimize areas of friction without conceding on core areas of national interest and at the same time build on areas of convergence. And I think Prime Minister Modi had established a good working relationship with him in his first term.”

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Meera Shankar, former Indian Ambassador to U.S.:
“I think Trump will seek to persuade India to buy more, particularly, I think, U.S. defence equipment and so on. And yes, I think for India that could also be an area where we see some synergies with the U.S. So this should not be so problematic. But yes, if Trump seeks to raise tariffs on agricultural exports from India, if India does not open up the agricultural market, then I think India will probably dig its heels in to some extent.”

15. SOUNDBITE (English) Meera Shankar, Former Indian Ambassador to U.S.:
“The possible irritants flow from President Trump’s political agenda, including the biggest deportation of illegal migrants in history as he has promised. And here India has signalled a positive approach, saying we will cooperate with you on taking back our nationals. But I think we would like it done in a more discreet way, which does not offend the dignity of those who are being sent back.”
