They said that I have to evacuate my house in seven minutes. They demanded that the entire building, that houses 50 people, to be evacuated. We walked from the Nur Shams camp, fifty of us, to the village of Dhanaba on foot through the olive trees without help from anyone."

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Palestinians on Tuesday fled their homes in a refugee camp in the northern occupied West Bank as the Israeli army escalated its raid against Palestinian militants.

Nashat Salman and his family were forced to leave their home in the Nur Shams refugee camp on Monday at around 3 in the morning (local time).

Israeli soldiers who arrived at their building "said that I have to evacuate my house in seven minutes," Salman said.

He and his family walked through a field of olive trees to the nearby village of Dhanaba.

He and his family now sleep on the floor of a crowded community center in the village of Kafr al-Labad.

They live on food donations and wear only the clothes they were able to bring.

But the toughest part, he says, is the uncertainty about how long he and his kids will have to stay in the shelter, as the Israeli military bulldozes roads and takes over houses in the camp.

Earlier this week, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced the expansion of the crackdown on the northern part of the West Bank, which first targeted the Jenin refugee camp.

Since then, it has spread to other camps in the area, most recently Nur Shams.

The Israeli military did not respond to a request for comment as to why it was forcibly evacuating civilians from the camp.

Hundreds have fled from Nur Shams in recent weeks, both driven by force or by the miserable conditions, as part of a wider wave of displacement that the United Nations says has affected some 40,000 Palestinians in the northern West Bank in recent weeks.
