STORYLINE:
Two Venezuelan state airliners arrived Monday with repatriated migrants deported from the U.S.
The reception takes place more than a week after a senior U.S. official visited Caracas on behalf of President Donald Trump’s administration.
The deported Venezuelans, who according to President Nicolás Maduro would number almost 190, were traveling on Conviasa airline flights and their landing and disembarkation was followed live on the president’s weekly radio and television program.
The deportations came days after Trump’s envoy for special missions, Richard Grenell, visited Caracas and met with Maduro to discuss the repatriation of Venezuelans who entered the country irregularly.
Grenell returned with six Americans who had been detained in Venezuela.
The meeting in Venezuela’s capital came less than a month after Maduro was sworn in for a third six-year term, despite credible evidence that he lost last year’s election.
The U.S. government, along with several other Western nations, does not recognize Maduro’s claim of victory and instead refers to poll sheets collected by the opposition coalition that that show the victory of opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez.
