"They said that there’s an incursion of the camp. And so (my son) took his wife and his brother and said they would leave and go to their in-laws. On the way they were met with the army. They shot at my son, in his head, and his wife. He lost consciousness immediately. His wife was fine, nothing happened to her (then), and she was pregnant in the eighth month, was about to have a baby. She was calling for help, saying, ‘save us, save us’. She was asking me for help, and saying ‘help, please’ when we were on the phone with her.”

"She told me that she saw the army coming, and when (the soldiers) saw her, they shot her in her leg and her stomach. They killed her. They left them there and left. The (phone) line was cut between us completely."

"We started calling the ambulance, the Red Cross, to go to help them. But they (the paramedics) were calling us, saying that they have no access and that the army kept turning them back. That was 3:30 a.m.. It wasn’t until 8:30 a.m. that the ambulances were able to reach them. By that time, the boy (my son) had lost all his blood. And she (my daughter-in-law) was dead and also had bled a lot by the time the ambulance reached them.”

"Why did they shoot her? And he (my son) had nothing to do with anything. They could have stopped him, asked him a question. Immediately they just shot him. They didn’t give him a chance. My son is not part of the (militant) brigades or any (political) faction.”

STORYLINE:
The call came after 3:30 a.m., Mohammed Sha’ala said, shortly after he heard the blare of gunfire.
His daughter-in-law, eight months pregnant with her first child, was whispering, her voice choked with panic.
“Help, please,” she said. “You have to save us.”
Some minutes earlier, Sundus Shalabi and her husband, 26-year-old Yazan Sha’ala, had fled their home as Israeli security forces closed in on Nur Shams refugee camp, a crowded urban district in the northern West Bank city of Tulkarem.
The Israeli army was surrounding the camp, part of a larger crackdown on Palestinian militants in the occupied West Bank that has escalated since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza took effect last month.
Israeli military raids have spread from the Jenin refugee camp, long a hotbed of militancy, to other Palestinian camps in the north of the territory.
On Sunday, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced the expansion of the military’s operations in the area, saying it was meant to prevent Iran — allied with Hamas — from establishing a foothold in the territory.
Their baby’s due date was approaching.
