STORYLINE:
Designer Bibhu Mohapatra says his latest Fall/Winter collection was inspired by a recent pilgrimage he took to his home country of India to honor the memories of his parents and older brother.

Hundreds of jasmine flowers hand strung to look like curtains hung at the entrance of the runway In a stunning ball room at the Pierre hotel in New York Monday. The flowers evoked many of the flower details in the collection.

Most of the looks were formal gowns in shades of mauve, burgundy and lavender, many with sequins and teardrop shaped gemstones. Mohapatra said those repeated patterns were influenced by his mother’s favorite saris.

The collection is called the Pilgramage, referring to a visit to his home state of Odisha, India after taking a "sacred journey" to three of India’s holiest sites as part of fulfilling a tradition to perform final rites for his parents and his brother, whom he lost in 2021.

The trip brought up emotions and memories that helped fuel his designs.

Mohapatra uses sumptuous fabrics of satin, lace and tulle. Some of the looks resembled fireworks — incorporating gold and ombré patterns of shiny sparkled fabrics.
