STORYLINE:
President Donald Trump is moving to reverse a federal push away from plastic straws, declaring that paper straws “don’t work.”
Trump signed an executive order Monday.
His move targets a Biden administration policy to phase out federal purchases of single-use plastics, including straws, by 2035.
Several U.S. states and cities have banned plastic straws because they pollute oceans and waterways and harm marine life.
Some restaurants no longer automatically give plastic straws to customers.
Patrons at a coffee shop in Charlotte, North Carolina on Monday weighed in on the plastic or paper straw debate.
Lyndsey Funderburk, A resident of North Carolina says she prefers the plastic straw.
“I mean, I know it’s definitely worse for the environment. I wish there was a different way, but I mean the paper ones are always soggy, so it’s a little difficult. But, you know,” Funderburk said.
Meanwhile, Sylvia Clark, another patron the cafe, said that she does not like plastic straws.
“I think that as a consumer, I would definitely choose to support places that don’t have plastic straws. But I do believe that the government should continue eliminating the plastic straws,” Clark said.
Trump has long railed against paper straws, and his 2019 reelection campaign sold Trump-branded reusable plastic straws.
