"We are approaching the level of capabilities of these systems where they can be used by terrorists to wreak havoc in many different ways with bioweapons, with cyber attacks, with misinformation and finally, another risk is economic survival. The few companies in the world and the few countries in the world where the top systems will be building AGIs (Artificial General Intelligence), will have the ability to wipe out the rest of the businesses because they can replace those businesses by the AI driven businesses, where it’s not just like the normal run of the mill AIs but the, like, super human AIs that they will not share with the rest of the world."

"The governments in general don’t understand the risks that I’m talking about. If they were and if they understood the potential urgency of doing something, because you’re talking about years, not decades, like there’s been an acceleration of the advances, they would move as rapidly as they moved for the pandemic. But we haven’t reached that level of understanding and awareness of what’s coming to us."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Yoshua Bengio, Scientific Director Mila Quebec AI Institute:
"I don’t know exactly where the new U.S. administration is going to go on AI. I’ve had a lot of discussions with the Chinese. They’re taking many of these risks very seriously. We need to understand that if we stay in an adversarial posture and we don’t see our shared goals of prosperity on this planet, humanity continuing to prosper, we’re in for big trouble."

STORYLINE:
AI scientist Yoshua Bengio warned on Monday at an AI summit in Paris about the potential dangers AI might hold.

"We are approaching the point where these systems can be used by terrorists to wreak havoc in many different ways," warned Bengio.

"The governments in general don’t understand the risks that I’m talking about," he added.

His words come as world leaders gather to discuss the potentials and pitfalls on AI.

Regarding the roles of the US and China, Bengio warned that international cooperation in terms of AI is not only key but necessary to avoid serious conflicts.

"We need to understand that if we stay in an adversarial posture and we don’t see our shared goals of prosperity on this planet, humanity continuing to prosper, we’re in for big trouble."

High-profile attendees include U.S. Vice President JD Vance, on his first overseas trip since taking office, and Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing.

The summit, which gathers major players such as Google, Microsoft and OpenAI, aims at fostering AI advances in sectors like health, education, environment and culture.

A global public-private partnership named “Current AI” is to be launched to support large-scale initiatives that serve the general interest.

French organizers also hope the summit will lead to major investment announcements in Europe.
