STORYLINE:
Firefighters and volunteers continued on Sunday to battle Patagonia wildfires, which have been active for 12 days.

The fires have caused one death and destroyed dozens of homes along with more than 3,000 hectares of forest in a protected area near the tourist town of El Bolsón, in Patagonia.

The flames continued to move towards the town, fueled by the strong winds and dry weather that’s affecting the region in the past days.

A brief storm Sunday night brought some relief to locals and authorities, but it hardly affected the fire’s intensity.

Evacuations have been ordered in some neighborhoods, as houses are mostly surrounded by forests that are on the path of the fire.

The fire started 12 days ago in the park, which, during this time of the austral summer, welcomes around 800 visitors per day.

It is the third large-scale wildfire to spread in Patagonia this year, following the one affecting Nahuel Huapi National Park and another in the town of Epuyén, which burned forests and about 50 homes.

Authorities said in early February that a man died in El Bolsón after he became trapped in Mallín Ahogado, one of the most affected areas.

He had managed to get out of the fire, but returned to leave food for his dogs and was unable to escape.

To battle the current fire, three planes, two helicopters, and brigades have been arriving from different parts of Patagonia.

In addition, more than 90 volunteer firefighters, and dozens of residents transporting water are assisting in the efforts to extinguish the fire.
