"I came out today to show that I am against President Trump’s statement that Gazans should go to Jordan or Egypt. That is something that cannot happen. I want to show sympathy to our brothers and sisters in Palestine. We stand with them both physically and in spirit. We want Trump and his allies to understand that this is not acceptable."

5. SOUNDBITE (Somali) Ahmed Abdullahi Mohamed, protester:
"Our brothers in Palestine have suffered repeatedly, and for President Trump to say that Gazans should move to other countries is a complete trap. Trump wants to ensnare the Muslims in Gaza, and that is why we are here; we will not accept this."

7. SOUNDBITE: (Somali) Sheikh Abdi Hayyi, protest organizer:
"Trump’s decision is ironic and undermines justice. It sides with aggressors and violates the rights of those who have fought for independence for many years. Instead of supporting their struggle for independence, he goes against them and supports their enemy, ordering them to leave their land. This is something we cannot accept, and as Somalis, we view this as a profound injustice."

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Somalis gathered Thursday afternoon in the Peace Garden in Mogadishu to voice their support for Palestinians and reject U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent remarks suggesting that Gaza should be razed and redeveloped.

The demonstrators, many carrying Palestinian flags and banners reading “Gaza is not for sale” and “Somalis stand with Palestine,” denounced Trump’s proposal that residents of Gaza should relocate to countries such as Egypt and Jordan.

“I came out today to show that I am against President Trump’s statement that Gaza residents should go to Jordan or Egypt. That is something that cannot happen,” said demonstrator Seynab Iid Ibrahim

“We stand with them both physically and in spirit. We want Trump and his allies to understand that this is not acceptable,” she added.

The protest in Mogadishu is part of growing regional opposition to Trump’s stance on Gaza, as well as widespread calls for international solidarity with Palestinians.
