“We’re here in Santorini, where the normally busy clifftop streets have fallen quiet. Behind me, you can see a caldera, a volcanic crater. But these famous views that draw millions each year are now being enjoyed by just a handful of visitors. It’s the fifth day of continuous seismic activity in the region, with undersea earthquakes of up to magnitude 5. The authorities have expanded precautionary measures to 13 islands. Experts say the tremors are unrelated to volcanic activity. But the frequency – sometimes every few minutes – has led to thousands of residents and seasonal workers leaving to temporarily relocate.

“These streets are typically bustling even in the off-season. Local authorities are implementing widespread precautions: schools are closed, public events canceled, and construction work has been halted in vulnerable areas. Ferry operators have put on extra services to accommodate those who want to leave. But not everyone is going. Some residents, particularly those who’ve lived here for decades, are choosing to stay, with a small number of tourists who are finding themselves with an unusually peaceful version of Santorini to themselves.”

STORYLINE:
Greek authorities are bolstering their emergency plans in case earthquakes rattling the volcanic island of Santorini every few minutes turn out to be a harbinger of a larger quake to come.

Thousands of residents and visitors have already left the island, frightened by the temblors measuring between magnitude 3 and magnitude 5 that have struck the area since the weekend.

Ferry lines and commercial airlines have added extra routes this week to accommodate the increased demand, although ferry services were disrupted on Wednesday due to rough weather.

A coast guard vessel and a military landing craft were in the wider area as a contingency should an evacuation be required, the Civil Protection Minister said during an emergency meeting with security officials, scientists and the prime minister in Athens.

Rescue crews with a sniffer dog and drones have been deployed since Sunday, while authorities have banned access to several coastal areas and ordered schools on several islands to shut for the week.

Public events have also been banned, and local authorities were restricting access to clifftop tourist hotspots.
