2. SOUNDBITE (English) Jessica Bogosian, Director of Community Medicine, San Francisco SPCA:
"Parvo is a super contagious, potentially life-threatening virus that attacks the stomach and intestines of dogs and can cause severe vomiting, diarrhea sometimes with blood, and as a result, can really lead to severe dehydration. It’s contracted through contact with infected feces, which can be transmitted through surfaces. So either licking feet or looking areas, picking that up in that way. And really the important thing to know about parvo is that it’s almost completely preventable through vaccinations."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Jessica Bogosian, Director of Community Medicine, San Francisco SPCA:
"What we’re seeing in the last few months is really a huge uptick in cases here in this community, specifically in the Tenderloin. And so we’re gathering data still on what that looks like so that we can start to monitor the response to our efforts. But we’re really just trying to get ahead of that right now."

STORYLINE:
A free vaccination clinic in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district offered crucial health protection for local dogs, particularly those belonging to low-income and unhoused pet owners.

The clinic, organized by a coalition of animal welfare organizations, provided vaccinations for the highly contagious and often deadly Parvovirus, which has been spiking across the U.S. in recent years.

The Parvo virus, which causes severe gastrointestinal illness in dogs, has been spreading more rapidly in areas with large populations of unhoused people, many of whom have pets that lack access to routine veterinary care.

Parvo is spread through infected feces, often times by dogs licking their paws after walks.

In San Francisco, the Tenderloin has seen a particularly alarming rise in cases, with local shelters and rescue groups working overtime to care for infected animals.

The free clinic, held at a community center in the heart of the Tenderloin, vaccinated over 100 dogs, providing both the Parvo vaccine and additional resources for pet care.

The clinic was part of a broader effort to bring much-needed healthcare services to communities disproportionately impacted by the pandemic and rising cost of living.
