La presidenta Claudia Sheinbaum anunció el lunes que Estados Unidos decidió pausar por un mes la aplicación de los aranceles generales de 25% para México, luego de que el gobierno mexicano acordara desplegar miles de elementos de la Guardia Nacional a lo largo de la frontera común para enfrentar el narcotráfico.
Por su parte, Estados Unidos se comprometió a trabajar para evitar el tráfico de armas de alto poder a México.
Los anuncios fueron ratificados por el presidente Donald Trump.
SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexican President:
"I asked him to pause the tariffs from the first moment – the tariffs – in this case we reached that agreement. But I also explained to him the seriousness of the amount of high-powered weapons that enter from the United States to Mexico and that these high-powered weapons that arrive illegally arm the criminal groups and give them firepower and that we asked him that United States also help our country to prevent the trafficking of weapons from the United States to Mexico. He agreed.”
La mandataria indicó que como parte de los acuerdos se decidió constituir unos grupos de trabajo binacionales para discutir asuntos de seguridad y comercio.
El acuerdo se da luego de que Trump anunció el sábado aranceles generalizados de 25% para las importaciones mexicanas y la mayoría de los productos provenientes de Canadá y una tasa de 10% para el petróleo canadiense. Además, acordó un impuesto de 10% para las importaciones chinas.
