“Both of us, the U.S. and Europe benefit from the exchange of goods and the exchange of services. If the tariff policy now makes this difficult, that would be bad for the U.S. and bad for Europe. It’s clear that, as a strong economic area, we can shape our own things for ourselves and can react to tariff policies with tariff policies. We must and will then do that, but the perspective and aim should be that we proceed in such a way that things come down to cooperation.”

STORYLINE:
German chancellor Olaf Scholz warned about the consequences of potential US tariffs on EU goods on Monday.
"That would be bad for the U.S. and bad for Europe," Scholz said as he arrived for an informal EU leaders’ retreat in Brussels.
The comments come after President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on key U.S. trading partners.
Trump’s 25% tariffs on most imports from Canada and Mexico and 10% tariffs on goods from China are to take effect Tuesday.
Scholz said the bloc "can react to tariff policies with tariff policies".
"We must and will then do that, but the perspective and aim should be that we proceed in such a way that things come down to cooperation,” the German leader added.
