1. Gov. Ron DeSantis approaches podium
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Gov. Ron DeSantis, (R) Florida:
"If this is such good legislation, why have they not sent me the bill yet to act on? Why are they holding the bill for me to act on? And I think the reason is, is because if we get the bill and we do an event where we have a lot of people and I veto the bill in front of this crowd, is the crowd going to cheer or is the crowd going to boo? Crowd is going to cheer."

3. SOUNDBITE (English) Gov. Ron DeSantis, (R) Florida:
"We want a duty for all state and local law enforcement agencies to cooperate and participate with the Trump administration’s efforts. That’s what they’ve called for in the executive orders. And we need to step up there and do it."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Gov. Ron DeSantis, (R) Florida:
"So they’re going to do more in the Fed. There’s no question they’ll beef it up. But unless you have state and locals assisting and being able to bring illegal aliens for deportation, being able to end catch and release, do all these things, none of this stuff’s ultimately…the problem’s not ultimately going to be solved."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Gov. Ron DeSantis, (R) Florida:
"Donald Trump won big, strong borders, strong on illegal immigration. And so now it’s time to act on this. President’s done his part with changing all the Biden policies. As part of the policies he’s implemented they are inviting state and locals to be a part of these efforts."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Gov. Ron DeSantis, (R) Florida:
++AUDIO AS INCOMING++
"We can actually have state and local deputized by ICE to be able to exercise immigration and deportation functions. I just signed a memorandum of understanding with with DHS and ICE with our highway patrol. So director Dave Kerner, his guys out there, if you have an illegal driving drunk and they get pulled over, well, the highway patrol can then take them to immigration too. Why do you want to put an illegal back on the road to be able to do all this stuff?"
STORYLINE:
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis told voters Friday that he will veto a sweeping immigration bill, the latest escalation in a statehouse showdown between DeSantis’ office and the Legislature’s Republican leaders, who have sparred over whose proposals would best carry out President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.
The House Speaker and Senate President tossed out DeSantis’ immigration proposals in favor of their own bill, which among other things would strip the governor of emergency enforcement powers.
DeSantis has taken to cable news and social media to blast the bill as “weak” and “watered-down” compared to his ideas.
