“They seem in a stable condition in that they’re undergoing medical, physical and mental evaluation. We need to remember that although nourishment-wise, they are currently in an okay weight, the food that they got was very dull. So it was mainly pitot (Pita bread), a lot of carbs, not much protein, not much vegetables. They were not exposed to light either, not because some of them were underground, but even when they were not underground, they describe rooms which were shaded. And we already can see a decrease in vitamin D, which, as we all know, is something which you get when you are exposed to the sun. “

“They are here treated in a very holistic approach, looking both mentally and physically. We’re taking the time. No pressure. The idea is to let them regain control over their lives after all they have suffered. They have suffered a lot. But we can emphasize this, the high spirit, and how strong and resilient these people are. They’re very, very happy to be here."

STORYLINE:
The director of a hospital treating five released Thai hostages from Hamas captivity said on Friday they are undergoing medical evaluations, but were otherwise stable.

Dr. Osnat Levzion-Korach of the Shamir Medical Center said the released captives’ diets had been poor and they were suffering from a vitamin D deficiency.

"A lot of carbs, not much protein, not much vegetables. They were not exposed to light either, not because some of them were underground, but even when they were not underground, they describe rooms which were shaded," she said.

On Thursday militants in the Gaza Strip released eight hostages, handing them over to the Red Cross amid chaotic crowds as part of a swap that is set to see 110 Palestinians released from Israeli prisons later in the day.

The five were Thai farm workers who were handed over amid a chaotic crowd in the city of Khan Younis.

It’s the third such exchange since a ceasefire took hold in the Gaza Strip earlier this month.
