(14 Mar 1972) RR7211 BANGLADESH: ONE YEAR ON
On March 26th 1971 civil war broke out in Pakistan
when Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, leader of the 75 million
Bengalis in the Eastern wing of the country, proclaimed
the independent republic of Bangla Desh. That republic
did not become a practical, functioning reality until
December 1971, when India entered the conflict on the
Bengalis’ side and forced a surrender from the
Pakistan Army after a fierce, two-week war. The new
nation was born with shattered industries, a disrupted
economy and many social and political problems. With
most of the ten million Bengali refugees now returned
from India, food is in short supply and nothing short of
a massive international aid programme will avert wide-scale
hunger and disease.
