STORYLINE:
On Thursday Hamas-led militants freed eight more hostages from the Gaza Strip and another 110 Palestinian prisoners were released by Israel as part of a ceasefire that began earlier this month.
The exchange of hostages for prisoners is a key part of a ceasefire agreement aimed at ending the deadliest and most destructive war ever fought between Israel and Hamas.
Among the Palestinian prisoners who were released, 30 were serving life sentences for deadly attacks against Israelis; seven were allowed to return to the occupied West Bank, but the rest were being transferred to Egypt before further deportation.
Ibrahim Qashua, was sentenced to 6 life sentences in prison plus 20 years. He served 20 years.
Bilal al-Edaini, who spent 22 years and 5 months from his 25-year sentence in prison
Zakaria Zubeidi, a prominent former militant leader whose dramatic jailbreak in 2021 thrilled Palestinians and stunned the Israeli security establishment, was beaming as he was hoisted on the shoulders of whistling and cheering supporters.
“Thank you to my loved ones,” he said as crowds jostled around him. “May there be a speedy recovery for our wounded, and mercy upon our martyrs in the Gaza Strip.”
