STORYLINE:
Heavy rainfall from Storm Ivo pummelled northwestern France on Wednesday, causing severe flooding in the small town of Redon.
Emergency workers in wetsuits dragged inflatable boats through the flooded streets, helping residents and their belongings get to dry land.
Three departments in the northwest were under red alert for flooding, as Ivo followed close on the heels of the previous two storms, Eowyn and Herminia.
Around 1,000 people have been evacuated from their homes due to the severe weather conditions since the weekend.
According to France’s national flood-warning service, the level of the Vilaine River in Redon reached 5.3 meters (17 feet) on Wednesday afternoon, about 60 cm (24 inches) higher than the same time a day earlier.
Emergency services are on high alert, and residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel as authorities continue to monitor the situation.
The ongoing weather conditions pose significant challenges for affected communities, with further evacuations possible as the flooding persists.
