STORYLINE:
Huge crowds celebrated as buses carrying Palestinian prisoners released under the Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal arrived in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Thursday.
Some 110 detainees were due to be released by Israel as part of the latest round of exchanges.
Thousands of Palestinians — the relatives and friends of released prisoners but also scores of jubilant supporters — mobbed the buses arriving in Ramallah.
As soon as they stepped off the buses, the crowd hoisted the prisoners in the air.
The release was delayed after Israel objected to chaotic scenes during the handover of eight hostages held in Gaza earlier in the day.
The releases are part of a ceasefire aimed at ending the deadliest and most destructive war ever fought between Israel and Hamas, and securing the release of dozens more hostages abducted in the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023, that ignited the war.
