7. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Federica Rinaldi, chief archaeologist of the Roman Forum:
“We are now inside the Schola Praeconum, the training centre of the heralds of the Circus Maximus. This Schola is the college for those who were announcing the shows and the races taking place in the Circus Maximus. This building is located on the southern slopes of the Palatine hill, right in front of the Circus Maximus and was build in the Severian age, the third century A.D., for this specific purpose.”

8. Various of school
9. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Angelica Pujia, senior restorer of the Roman Forum archaeological park:
”We are in an archaeological context, we performed a conservative restoration, on the bricks and tough surfaces we just sealed the surfaces, while where we found plaster and frescoes with colours, we did a conservative restoration aimed at highlighting and reading the colours and the shapes, which are not always easy to interpret. This restoration allowed us to see again polychromes that would have been lost.”

11. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Federica Rinaldi, chief archaeologist of the Roman Forum:
“We see eight people, eight male figures, arranged right in a procession and equipped with sticks and other tools, for example banners. They seem almost ready to leave this school, this college and head to the Circus Maximus to announce the start of the chariot-races and the shows in the Circus Maximus to the emperor that he was watching them from above and to the entire audience. LEAD IN:

Ancient Rome’s famed gladiators are known for the fierce battles they fought, cheered on by baying crowds.

But perhaps less known is the history of the imperial heralds whose job it was to warm up the crowds ahead of the main event.

Now, visitors to the Roman Forum can enter an ancient school that served to train the heralds to entertain the masses and their masters.

STORYLINE:

Open to the public following a major conservation programme is an ancient Roman school that is thought to have trained imperial heralds to announce spectacles and races in Ancient Rome’s Circus Maximus.

The imperial heralds, praecōnēs in Latin, would parade the 620 metre (2,034 foot) long stadium, while, it is assumed, the emperor was watching from his palace on the Palatine hill overlooking the Circus Maximus.

“We are now inside the Schola Praeconum, the training centre of the heralds of the Circus Maximus. This Schola is the college for those who were announcing the shows and the races taking place in the Circus Maximus. This building is located on the southern slopes of the Palatine hill, right in front of the Circus Maximus and was build in the Severian age, the third century A.D., for this specific purpose,” explains Federica Rinaldi, chief archaeologist at the Roman Forum.

Visitors will be able to enjoy the heralds school on Sundays and Mondays.
