STORYLINE:
Dozens of protesters, angered over the fatal shooting of an Indonesian migrant worker in neighbouring waters, threw eggs on Thursday at the Malaysian embassy in Indonesia’s capital.
The protest came a day after Indonesian authorities in Riau province received the body of a 50-year-old migrant worker who was fatally shot by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency of APMM for alleged trespassing.
The incident, which took place on January 24 in the waters off Tanjung Rhu Beach in Selangor state, also left four other Indonesian migrant workers injured.
Indonesia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement a day after the incident, that the fatal shooting occurred as the five Indonesians were attempting to depart Malaysia through illegal means.
The ministry has since demanded a thorough investigation, specifically into the possible use of excessive force by the APMM.
Nearly a hundred demonstrators from various rights groups and labour unions gathered along a major street in downtown Jakarta that runs outside the embassy.
Eggs covered the state symbol of Malaysia at the mission’s fence, and the building itself appeared to have egg stains and cracked shells on it.
“They were ordinary civilians who did not put up any resistance, they were not criminals. But they were bombarded with gunfire so cruelly,” said Rifki Mubarok, a protest organizer from the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions.
The shooting drew a national outcry in Indonesia after a video made by one of the victims went viral on social media last week.
It showed several Indonesian migrants seen slumped weakly with gunshot wounds near a boat.
