La comunidad china en Cuba celebró el Año Nuevo Lunar la noche del martes, dándole la bienvenida al Año de la Serpiente con un desfile iluminado con lanternas en el Barrio Chino de La Habana.
La comunidad china en Cuba es una de las más antiguas en el continente americano. En la década de 1850, llegaron trabajadores chinos a la isla a laborar en los campos de caña. Ahora, sus descendientes mantienen vivas sus tradiciones, y le han agregado un toque cubano.
El Año Nuevo Lunar, conocido como el Festival de Primavera en China, Tet en Vietnam y Seollal en Corea, es un importante festival celebrado por comunidades de la diáspora en todo el mundo. La serpiente, uno de los 12 animales del zodiaco chino, sigue al recién terminado Año del Dragón.
