And I assure you that my country stands by your side in your important work of remembrance, but also by your country’s side in this terrible war that (Russian President Vladimir) Putin is waging against Ukraine, its freedom and independence, against the people of Ukraine. We will continue to support you. We stand by your side and will remain at your side. Thank you, Mr Schwarzmann, for being here.”

“Odessa, my home town, is suffering immensely from the Russian terror. I’m seeing devastation and misery again. I’m seeing the faces of Ukrainian defenders who return after being held prisoners of war in Russia. Their stories about the Russian occupiers, torture chambers give me phantom pain. I was in the ghetto. I saw the devil, and I say – we overestimate him (referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin) a lot. His power is only as great as we allow it to be.”

STORYLINE:
The German parliament on Wednesday commemorated the victims of Nazi rule and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Roman Schwarzman, a Ukraine-born Holocaust survivor addressed parliament.

In a speech given at the event by Steinmeier, he thanked Schwarzman for his attendance.

Schwarzman also addressed the audience which included German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President of the German Bundestag Baerbel Bas, other Holocaust survivors and officials.

In reference to Ukraine, Schwarzman said “Odessa, my home town, is suffering immensely from the Russian terror. I’m seeing devastation and misery again."

He also made comments about Russian President Vladimir Putin, adding "’We overestimate him (Putin) a lot. His power is only as great as we allow it to be".

Schwarzman’s speech was met with a standing ovation.
