STORYLINE:
Moscow launched a metro train decorated with Chinese motifs for the Lunar New Year on Wednesday amid strengthening relations with one-time rival China.
Featuring a golden dragon snaking its way down the exterior and traditional Chinese images inside, the train will operate on the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya line for about a month, connecting the eastern and western parts of Russia’s capital.
China’s ambassador to Russia, Zhang Hanhui, praised the artistry of the Moscow metro and stressed the historic ties between the two nations.
"Let’s get on this train, which symbolises the centuries-long friendship between China and Russia, and head for the bright future of our bilateral relations," he said.
The Lunar New Year is the most important annual holiday in China, a time for reunions with relatives and friends and to enjoy festive feasts.
Each year is named after one of the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac, with this year being the Year of the Snake.
During its month on the tracks, Moscow transport authorities say some 250,000 people will see the train.
Besides the train, Moscow is also celebrating the Lunar New Year with streets decked out with lanterns and dragons, cultural workshops and traditional Chinese foodstalls.
