STORYLINE:
Hundreds of people queued on Tuesday in the hours before midnight on Lunar New Year’s eve at Hong Kong’s famous Wong Tai Sin Taoist temple.

Traditionally, big crowds build up before 11pm local time, with everyone trying to be the first, or among the first, to put their incense sticks into the stands in front of the temple’s main hall.

The belief is that the earliest to offer their incense sticks and prayers stand the best chance of having their wishes come true.

Local celebrity and temple regular Lana Wong attracts attention with her homemade costumes every year.

For the Chinese Zodiac Year of the Snake, she wore two toy snakes around her neck.

Wong made her traditional plea for world peace at the temple at the start of the incense ceremony.

Ming So is another temple regular who has made annual visits except during the pandemic.

“I wish my family will be blessed. I hope my business will run well. I pray for my country and wish people peace. I hope this coming year is a better year," he said.
