4. SOUNDBITE (English) Eric Tucker, The Associated Press:
“Kash Patel, President Donald Trump’s pick to lead the FBI, is expected to face a bruising confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee this week. We’re expected to hear lots of questions from Democrats centered on the perception that Kash Patel is a loyalist who would put the interests of Trump, the president, ahead of the interests of the American public. And that concern is due in part to public statements that Mr. Patel has made over the last several years, in which he has been very critical of FBI investigations into Trump himself and has been very critical of the FBI as an institution and the FBI leadership and decision making. The Associated Press, in preparation for this hearing, has reviewed more than 100 podcasts over the last four years that Kash Patel either hosted or participated in, and there are some really significant through lines and trends that emerge from that careful review. One of them is that Patel is a fierce defender of Trump and a fierce critic in very personal terms of the investigations into him, both of which resulted in indictments that were then abandoned by the Justice Department following Trump’s presidential win in November. We’ve also heard a lot of talk about specific individuals who Kash Patel thinks are deserving of investigation and prosecution. And in fact, in his book he includes a list by name of individuals who he identifies as being members of the so-called Deep State. So, at this hearing, we’re expected to hear a lot of Republican support for Patel as a type of figure who can sort of get in there and shake up the FBI. But we’re also expect to hear a lot of skeptical questioning from Democrats who are really concerned that he may not be the right person for the job.”

STORYLINE:
Kash Patel, president Donald Trump’s nominee to head the FBI, will be seated for what is expected to be a grueling Senate Confirmation hearing on Thursday.
Patel positioned himself as a steadfast Donald Trump loyalist well before the president picked him to run the FBI.
In preparation for the hearing, the Associated Press reviewed nearly 100 podcasts that Patel hosted or on which he was interviewed over the last four years.
Associated Press reporter Eric Tucker says the podcasts reveal how Patel has denigrated the investigations into Trump, sowed doubt in the criminal justice system, criticized the decision-making of the institution he’s been asked to lead and professed sympathy for jailed Jan. 6 rioters.
“We’ve also heard a lot of talk about specific individuals who Kash Patel thinks are deserving of investigation and prosecution. And in fact, in his book he includes a list by name of individuals who he identifies as being members of the so-called Deep State,” Tucker said.
