STORYLINE:
Dozens gathered on Monday for the funeral of a Lebanese man killed by in a southern village on Sunday.

Lebanon’s health ministry said Israeli fire killed 24 people and wounded 134 others when troops opened fire on demonstrators breaching roadblocks near the border as they tried to return to their villages.

Ali Hassan Jaber was among those killed while trying to cross a barrier towards the village of Kafar Kila near the Lebanese-Israeli border.

Under a US.-brokered ceasefire in late November, Israeli troops were to withdraw from southern Lebanon, and Hezbollah was to move north of the Litani River by January 26, with the Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers deploying in the south.

However, implementation delays left Israeli forces in over a dozen villages, sparking protests by residents expecting to return home by the deadline.

Lebanon has subsequently agreed to extend the ceasefire deadline until February 18.

Protests resumed on Monday particularly in eastern border villages, where residents again attempted to return home.
