“This year, more than 12,000 people are participating in the three-day Surva Festival, including over 3,300 children. As organizers, we find this incredibly gratifying because it shows that the tradition is not only being preserved but also thriving and spreading among people from the Pernik region and across the entire country. Behind us, we can hear the clamor of countless bells and clappers. Over the course of these three days, 12,000 participants will parade through with perhaps millions of bells, making this the largest masquerade festival in Europe. Pernik, now recognized as the World Capital of Masquerade Traditions, proudly hosts this extraordinary celebration."

In a Pernik, just outside Bulgaria’s capital, the Surva festival is underway, where Surva festival, thousands of Kukeri dancers perform ancient rituals, putting Bulgaria’s cultural heritage on the global stage.
