(21 Oct 1976) RR7642A TRANSKEI INDEPENDENCE BACKGROUNDER
On October 26th, 1976 the red, white and green flag of
the Transkei will be unfurled at Umtata and the fiftieth,
independent black African state will be born. But the
new nation will go almost totally unrecognised. For
the Transkei is the first of eight black homelands to
gain independence under South Africa’s policy of
separate racial development. Its critics claim that its
independence is spurious, that its economy and
politics will continue to be dominated by Pretoria.
Already the UN and OAU have offically refused to
grant it membership. This programme examines the
controversy and looks at the new state.
