"Our situation is difficult and distressing. In the winter and the cold, we are waiting for the checkpoint to be opened and we are waiting for a response from the Israelis, who have brought us to this situation, unable to protect ourselves or our children. In this situation and this cold, we are waiting to return to our homes, whether it’s destroyed or it remains. What is important is that we return. Whether we sleep or die, or get martyred in our homes is better than being humiliated in the streets"

STORYLINE:
Displaced Palestinian families huddled together outside on Saturday night, making small bonfires to fight the cold, as they waited for Israel’s military to allow their return to the north of Gaza Strip.

Israel had been expected to open the east-west Netzarim route, which bisects Gaza, on the seventh day of the ceasefire.

But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the pullback was on hold because of delays in the release of an Israeli civilian woman from captivity in Gaza.

Hamas released 4 female soldiers who had been held captive, Saturday.

However, a fifth female soldier in their unit, Agam Berger, 20, was abducted with them but not included in the list.

Mediators are trying to resolve the dispute.

One of the displaced waiting to cross into northern Gaza, Reda Al-Ashram, said she had been waiting since around 2 p.m. for the route north to be opened.

"We wait despite the cold. We have been waiting for this moment for 15 months. God willing, they will open the road for us so we can cross."
