STORYLINE:
Hundreds of displaced Palestinians have crowded on the southern side of Wadi Gaza, waiting for the Israeli military to allow them to return to their homes in the northern half of the coastal enclave.

"We are calling for help now. People are suffering, waiting, without food, drink, or anything. They are all waiting to return to Gaza City. Everyone wants to return to their homes," said one of the displaced, Muhammad Al-Ghazali.

According to the ceasefire deal, the Israeli military had been expected to allow hundreds of thousands of Palestinian to return to northern Gaza through the east-west Netzarim route, which bisects Gaza, starting Sunday.

But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the pullback was on hold because of delays in the release of an Israeli civilian woman from captivity in Gaza.

Hamas released four female soldier hostages: Karina Ariev, Daniella Gilboa, Naama Levy, and Liri Albag. But a fifth one, Agam Berger, 20, who was abducted with them, was not included in the release.

Mediators say they are trying to resolve the dispute.

Israel and Hamas have agreed in the ceasefire’s first phase to a gradual release of 33 hostages in Gaza, in exchange for almost 2,000 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

Three hostages were released Sunday in exchange for 90 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

Some 250 people were kidnapped during Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023 attack that triggered 15 months of war.

More than 90 hostages remain in Gaza, although at least a third are believed to be dead.

The others were released, rescued, or their bodies were recovered.

Israel’s military campaign has killed over 47,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not say how many were fighters but says more than half were women or children.
