"Timely is the word. This is a necessary film all of a sudden. We always knew we were going to do a great film. We didn’t know we were going to do a film that’s so important and so necessary right now. There’s so much hatred in the air, and this is all about love."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) John Lithgow, actor:
"You know, I can tell you a lot about what it’s like to work with Sophie. But the film tells you far more because Olivia plays Sophie. And she’s a filmmaker and you see her making a film and people will now share the experience I had working with Sophie Hyde."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Sophie Hyde, writer/director:
"It’s incredible. Like, Aud grew up on film sets and with us making films because my partner Brian is a cinematographer and editor as well. And so they’re so used to it, you know. But for me, collaborating with Aud is unlike anything else. Like we… the way that we explore the world is through making things. And so when we’re sitting in a room together, when we’re working on a set together, when we’re in the edit suite, there’s such a big part of my understanding of the world and how I explore it. And so to watch them find a way into that so, with such strength and power is incredible."

STORYLINE:
Olivia Colman and John Lithgow premiered LGBTQ+-themed film "Jimpa" at Sundance on Friday
The film is an semi-autobiographical drama, following the story of its director, Australian Sophie Hyde, and her father – the "Jimpa" of the title.
Oscar-winner Colman plays Hannah (who is based around Hyde), with John Lithgow taking the role of her dad.
"I can tell you a lot about what it’s like to work with Sophie," said Lithgow at the premiere. "But the film tells you far more because Olivia plays Sophie. And she’s a filmmaker and you see her making a film and people will now share the experience I had working with Sophie Hyde."
"Jimpa" also stars Hyde’s own transgender non-binary child – Aud Mason-Hyde – playing a version of themselves, who wants to live with her grandfather in a big city, hoping to find acceptance she’s struggled to locate in her hometown.
"Aud grew up on film sets and with us making films because my partner Brian is a cinematographer and editor as well," said Hyde. "And so they’re so used to it, you know.
With U.S. President Donald Trump rolling back protections for transgender people and terminating diversity, equity and inclusion programs within the federal government, the film’s message of hope and understanding looms large over proceedings.
"This is a necessary film all of a sudden," said Lithgow. "We always knew we were going to do a great film. We didn’t know we were going to do a film that’s so important and so necessary right now. There’s so much hatred in the air, and this is all about love."
