STORYLINE:
Believers celebrated the day of the Andean God of prosperity, Ekeko, by making wishes at a ceremony in Lima on Friday.
Dolls representing Ekeko were pinned with mock banknotes, notes with future endeavors and wishes of the believers who revere the deity in the Peruvian capital.
That took place amid a smoke of incense and tobacco.
The traditional character of ancient times, so rooted in the customs and traditions of the Peruvian-Bolivian highlands, is venerated for its symbolism of good luck, abundance, fortune, prosperity, happiness and fertility.
The plump, human-shaped character wears a poncho and chullo traditional hat.
To ask Ekeko for wishes, believers place lit cigarettes on the mouth of the dolls.
"You make him smoke and he grants your wish," said believer Rosa Marquez, as others lit incense and threw flower petals at the Ekeko figurine at the center of the ceremony.
