"You know, I followed it pretty closely, but just to kind of see the way that people were thinking and talking about the film. I think everyone, you know, thought that, you know, our film was really great and really interesting and just hoped that it got acknowledged because there are, you know, I’d say a hundred films, 200 or 300 films that could be in this top ten. Genuinely, you know, it’s a relatively arbitrary – in some ways – process. And so we’re just thrilled."

"One of the most interesting parts is that I think maybe more so than any film that is in this top ten, like this film – it elicits a super subjective response, you know? Like it forces someone to speak their mind. It isn’t ‘I like’ or ‘I dislike’ or ‘this worked or didn’t.’ It’s more a little bit more dynamic. And the conversations have been all over the place. And sometimes just being a person to sit and listen while the person kind of excavates their own psyche and other times it’s an exchange that’s, you know, more explanatory or more more of a dialogue. But yeah, it’s been… hopefully there’s more too, you know? Like this is a film that like needs discourse. It’s a film that’s built for discourse. The film is itself a discourse amongst itself. And so, yeah, I can’t wait to do it more."

"Yeah, it’s like such an interesting thing. It’s like genuine, sheer devastation and apocalyptic imagery while… I mean, it feels even silly to wake up this morning, you know, with nothing but, you know, glee in a way towards the future of the film, when the places that it could be shown aren’t even there anymore, you know? But I don’t know. I leave it up to the Academy members and the directors and the boards to make the best decision for their city. You know, they probably know the population way better than I do. You know, I’m just happy to be here."

STORYLINE:
Filmmaker RaMell Ross said the team behind his feature debut "Nickel Boys" are still processing their Oscar nomination for best picture.
“I think we’ll all still in shock. Everyone’s like: ‘Congratulations! We did it? Did we do it? Is this done? Is this it? What’s next? What should we do?’" he said, speaking from Providence, RI on Thursday afternoon.
Audiences see the story unfold largely through their eyes, as the camera switches perspectives between the two young men.
