3. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Mike Johnson, House Speaker:
“This would be the first bill signed by the president, my colleagues and the extraordinary work, majority, all the Georgia delegation worked so hard on this. This is the right thing to do. It is a– it’s a really important moment for the country. And it’s always good when the right thing is also the popular thing. And this is what the American people demand and deserve. They want accountability. They want us to address the human catastrophe that has come from the broken wide open border, that Biden Harris and Mayorkas and team did to the country. We are so grateful we have a new commander in chief, a new sheriff in town who is willing to stand for border security, safety, the sovereignty of the American people, and that we have all these strong leaders in Congress who are standing with the president to get this job done for the American people, this is our priority. It’s the country’s priority and it’s the right thing to do. Our hearts, our prayers continue for Laken’s family and all those who have been affected by the violent criminals who’ve been allowed to come across that border. We’re going to stop it. And it begins today. So thank you all for being here.”

STORYLINE:
House Speaker Mike Johnson held a signing ceremony for the Laken Riley Act which will now head to President Donald Trump and become the first bill that he will sign since returning to office.
Trump is poised to sign his first bill named after a Georgia nursing student who was murdered by a Venzuelan man in a case that became a rallying cry during his White House campaign he used as a cautionary tale to link immigration to violent crime.
If signed into law, the Laken Riley Act would require the detainment of unauthorized immigrants accused of theft and violent crimes. Although Republicans now have control of both congressional chambers, 46 Democrats supported the measure in the House and 12 Democrats in the Senate.
Trump signaled he looked forward to holding a bill signing “within a week or so" earlier this week.
