(27 Sep 1968) ABU SIMBEL : HOW THE TEMPLES WERE SAVED
The inauguration of the 3,000-year old temples of Rameses II and Queen Nefetari on their new site at Abu Simbel marks the completion of the greatest archeological engineering project ever undertaken. Had the temples been left in their original position on the banks of the Nile, they would have disappeared beneath the rising waters of Lake Nasser, now forming behind the walls of the Aswan High Dam. Work began over four years ago on a UNESCO plan to move the temples to a safer site 200 feet up the cliff from which they were originally hewn. The huge temples were cut into more than 1,000 major pieces, weighing between 20 and 30 tons each, and re- assembled in their original order on the new site.
