"While the unconstitutional and unlawful emergency martial law is considered the first rebellion, the riot incident at the Western District Court can be seen as the second rebellion. Rebellion begets rebellion, and riots beget riots. This is why it is important to suppress the rebellion as soon as possible. There can be no such thing as peaceful martial law."

6. SOUNDBITE (Korean) Song Doo-hwan, lawyer representing South Korean National Assembly:
"They are defending the anachronistic declaration of martial law while blatantly inciting attacks on the constitutional institution by claiming that constitutional responses—such as investigations, trials, and impeachment proceedings—are illegal and invalid."

STORYLINE:
Detained South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol appeared at a hearing for his impeachment trial Thursday.
Former Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun also attended.
Yoon, who was formally arrested last week, days after being apprehended at his presidential compound in Seoul, arrived at the Constitutional Court in a blue prison van escorted by presidential security vehicles.
Kim, who was arrested in December on allegations of playing a key role in rebellion and committing abuse of power, arrived in another prison van.
Kim was summoned to the hearing as a witness.
Before entering the court building, Jung Chung-rae, a lawmaker and chair of the National Assembly’s legislation and judiciary committee, stressed the urgency of easing the political turmoil quickly.
"Rebellion begets rebellion, and riots beget riots," he said, referring to the riot staged by Yoon’s supporters at the Western District Court last week after the court granted a warrant to formally arrest him.
Yoon’s lawyers did not comment as they entered the court.
His martial law decree has shaken South Korean politics, financial markets, and the country’s international image.
Yoon’s subsequent defiance and the opposition’s push to oust him have also intensified South Korea’s already serious internal divide.
