3. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, French President:
"After the new administration in the United States has taken office, it is more than ever up to Europeans, and therefore to our two countries, to play their full part in consolidating a united, strong and sovereign Europe – a Europe attached to the transatlantic link, and which also knows how to assert its own interests and defend them with its European values and instruments. The priority of Europeans must today be even more for our Europe and first and foremost for our competitiveness, our prosperity and our security, to also strengthen our democracies and preserve our economic and social model.”

5. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, French President:
"Defending our interests means contributing to peace and stability in our neighbourhood. It means continuing to support Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression and laying down the conditions for a just and lasting peace. It means building stability in the Middle East by supporting a peaceful and demanding political transition in Syria, by helping Lebanon to rebuild, by supporting the implementation of the ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Hamas. Finally, it means talking about the future and security of our continent on the scale of the greater Europe, as we did a few weeks ago at the European Political Community and as we will do next May in Albania. On these issues, Germany and France are moving forward hand in hand, convinced deep down that in the times ahead, faced with the challenges and sometimes the concerns that are emerging, the couple we form is solid.”

STORYLINE:
French President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday it was "more than ever" up to Europe to put itself first after Donald Trump returned to office as US president.

"The priority of Europeans must today be even more for our Europe and first and foremost for our competitiveness, our prosperity and our security, to also strengthen our democracies and preserve our economic and social model,” he said at a joint briefing with visiting German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at the Elysee Palace in Paris.

The two men were expected to discuss a wide range of issues during their bilateral meeting, including Ukraine, the Mideast, and the relationship with the United States.

Underscoring the bond between France and Germany, Macron said the two countries were "moving forward hand in hand" and their relationship was "solid".

Macron has called on Europe to spend more on defense in order to reduce its reliance on the United States for its security.

Trump has criticized the cost of the war in Ukraine for US taxpayers through major military aid packages and has made it clear that he wants to shift more of the fiscal burden onto Europe.
