Democrat presidential candidate Al Gore on Wednesday refused to concede defeat to Republican George W. Bush in the closest U-S presidential election ever.
In a rollercoaster election night, Gore’s campaign manager called the race "simply too close" to call.
Earlier in the evening, Gore had called Bush to congratulate him on winning the presidency and then went to the war memorial in downtown Nashville, Tennessee, with plans to make a concession speech.
But instead campaign manager William Daley appeared before the jubilant crowd and said the race was not over, and that indeed, the voting count in Florida showed the lead diminishing.
With Bush’s lead in the state razor thin and thinning, Daley said Gore would not concede until Bush was the official victor.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Vice President Gore and Senator Lieberman are fully prepared to concede and support Governor Bush if and when there is an officially elected president. But this vote is simply too close to call and until the recount is concluded and the results are official, our campaign continues."
