There are two survivors in the house of Eileen Rodriguez-Aquino — herself, and her 8-year-old grandson. Aquino lost her daughter, who was shot to death by her former partner. The little boy lost his mom, and he watched as his father opened fire on his mother. “Unfortunately, he does remember every detail,” his grandmother says. Which is why she is now an advocate against domestic violence. She does it for her daughter. And for her grandson, so that he may one day speak out, too.
