STORYLINE:
Palestinians have returned to their homes in Gaza’s southernmost city of Rafah to find massive destruction.
A ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, which began on Sunday, has allowed many to return to their homes across the enclave after 15 months of war.
Residents returning to Rafah found homes and neighbourhoods flattened after eight months of Israeli military offensives in the city.
“We came to the house but found destruction, everything was destroyed,” said Mohamed Abu Al-Kheir, a Palestinian man who had been sheltering in a tent in the city of Khan Younis.
“There is no place to live in. There is no furniture or anything,” he added.
Associated Press footage showed large swaths of Rafah turned into rubble.
People were seen searching the remains of their homes. Others searched two military vehicles that Israeli forces left behind when they withdrew from the area.
“Who wants to live in such destruction? No one will come to live here,” said Mahmoud Khamis, another Rafah resident whose house was destroyed.
