STORYLINE:
Buses carrying Palestinian detainees exited the gates of Israel’s Ofer prison just outside the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah overnight Sunday to Monday, as celebratory fireworks erupted.
Palestinians thronged the buses or climbed on top, chanting and cheering.
The release occurred more than seven hours after the first Israeli hostages were freed by Hamas.
This is as a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took hold following 15 months of war, with mixed emotions and more difficult steps ahead over the next six weeks.
