5. SOUNDBITE (English) Thomas Gift, Associate Professor of Political Science, University College London:
"Well, first, the inauguration is going to involve the swearing in of soon-to-be President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance. So they’ll take an oath of office that every president before them has taken. In addition, Donald Trump will give an inaugural address, and typically the speech, which lasts maybe 15 to 20 minutes, sets the tone for the upcoming administration. If you recall back in 2017, when Donald Trump was giving his address the first time, he talked about American carnage and gave a relatively dark view of America. Of course, now he’s saying – and then to – that he wants to make America great again. So we’re going to hear that as well."

"So the Supreme Court justices are there. Also, most notably, Joe Biden will be there. It was, of course, very notable back in 2021 after the January 6th insurrection that Donald Trump refused to show up for the inauguration of Joe Biden. So that represented a stark divergence from what had been the norm. But, for this inauguration, everyone’s going to be there across the political aisle, congressmen as well."

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Thomas Gift, Associate Professor of Political Science, University College London:
"Well, there will be huge crowds certainly in Washington. And Donald Trump, of course, likes to boast about his large crowd sizes. And so most of those will be of Republicans and other supporters. But it is a time when a lot of Americans look past partisan differences, or at least have in the past. So there will be many Democrats in attendance as well. Of course, it will be televised nationally and internationally. And it is something that just about every single major news station will cover."
