US President Donald Trump has revoked sanctions put on extremist Jewish Israeli settlers over violence in the occupied West Bank.
His predecessor Joe Biden had placed sanctions on several settlers accused of attacking Palestinians in the West Bank back in February 2024. The measures froze any US assets and placed visa restrictions on those affected.
Violent attacks by settlers on Palestinians in the West Bank have increased massively since the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas on October 7th, 2023.
Around 600,000 Israeli settlers live in settlements across the West Bank that are considered illegal under international law.
DW spoke to London School of Economics professor and author Fawez Gerges about Trump’s move and his administration’s approach to the settler movement.
