Donald Trump pardons nearly 1,600 defendants over January US Capitol riot | BBC News

US President Donald Trump has issued pardons or commutations nearly 1,600 people convicted or charged in connection with the US Capitol riot four years ago.

Fourteen members of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, two far-right groups, are among those whose sentences were commuted by the new Republican president as he took office on Monday.

It’s one of many executive actions he signed, including starting the process of withdrawing the US from the World Health Organization and declaring a national emergency at the southern border.

"The golden age of America begins right now," Trump said in his inaugural address, adding that he will be a "peacemaker and a unifier".
