STORYLINE:
The director and lead stars of ‘Emilia Perez,’ a gonzo trans-Mexican drug lord musical that is sweeping international film awards, told journalists on Wednesday the difficulty of making a movie that touches on the pain of human disappearances.
They also responded to negative reviews the film has received in Mexico ahead of its national release in theaters on Jan. 23.
Director Jacques Audiard told journalists in Mexico City that after his first trip to Mexico in the 1970s, he was moved by the thousands of human disappearances that continue to plague the country as a result of violence from organized crime.
While Audiard defended the film, he apologized to those who "find that I’m only grazing the surface of the issue."
Adriana Paz, the only Mexican main actor, burst into tears as she recalled her own kidnapping decades ago and dismissed criticism of the musical.
The film tells the story of a Mexican drug lord who fakes his own death to transition before emerging as a heroine searching for the disappeared.
Zoe Saldaña stars as Rita, a Mexico City lawyer hired by the cartel kingpin Manitas to help him flee Mexico for gender confirmation surgery. This turns out to be the beginning of a relationship that will continue between Rita and Emilia Perez (Karla Sofía Gascón).
Emilia returns years later, posing as Manitas’ sister, to stay close to her children who are living with her ex-wife (Selena Gomez).
